’ve come to a conclusion. There are way too many people in this city who shouldn’t be allowed to drive. Sure, most of them can start the car, and most of them can make it move, too. But that’s no reason to let them do so. I guess that my real complaint is that there are a lot of people who just drive way too fast, and most of them don’t pay nearly as much attention to what’s going on around them as they should.

You see, every morning when I walk into campus, I fear for my life. Generally, I walk down Griswald every morning, as I head either for the Admissions Building or the Union. Sadly, there is no sidewalk along most of road, so I am usually forced to walk in the roadway or along the side of it. It’s not too bad, it lets me get to where I need to go. But there’s this little problem. There are also cars that drive on this road. Most of these people are normal, safe drivers, and they just go around my fellow pedestrians and me, no problem there. Then there are the less-qualified drivers. I’m sure you know the ones that I mean, the ones that just zoom down with no regard for whatever or whomever might be in their way. Frankly, I’m sick of jumping out of the way of reckless drivers every day.

Of course, this small section of campus isn’t the only trouble spot. It seems that it’s treacherous to cross the street these days, even at a crosswalk. The crosswalk on 15th St. between the Union and the Quad comes to mind, as well as the intersection at Sage Ave. and Griswald, which I have come to know as the "intersection of doom." It’s ridiculous, and I’m amazed that there have only been a handful of injuries. There are quite a few remedies that I can conjure up, such as speed bumps, more effective enforcement of traffic laws, and more visible traffic signs. But there’s one remedy in particular that comes to mind that’s quite simple—when you drive, pay attention to what’s around you and watch your speed. It’s basic common sense.
