Jon Stack clarifies, provides E-board updates

Hello, RPI! I hope that everyone enjoyed many of the events and activities held this past weekend in conjunction with Family Weekend. Special thanks to Lisa Trahan and her entire staff in the Student Experience Office for the hard work that went into making the weekend a success!

On a different note, I would like to add some clarification to a couple of the articles that appeared in last week’s Poly. In regards to the recent elimination of the Dollar Deals in the Rathskeller, the income breakdown as reported last week is not entirely accurate. For the Rathskeller, the Rensselaer Union receives a fixed amount as income each year for use of that space. This price is negotiated each year based on past revenue, and so it is important for Sodexo and for students to ensure that good business decisions are being made. Secondly, in regards to Fathers, the Union receives a guaranteed amount each year for the use of that space; however this amount can increase if overall sales exceed their projected values.

In regards to the facilities upgrades under consideration right now, the Union Executive Board is working closely with the E-Board’s Facilities committee (and not Finance, Facilities, and Administration) to come up with a plan for the building in the coming years. If you are interested in getting involved in this process, contact Dave Pazzani ’13 (pazzad@rpi.edu), who chairs that committee.

In Executive Board news, last week saw many clubs and organizations present at our weekly meeting. The RPI Players came in to discuss their purchase of intelligent lighting fixtures for the Playhouse. They opted to purchase them from their gift account, which did not need approval. The RPI Foreign Language Club was approved as the newest Union-recognized organization, with the purpose of informing and educating students about foreign language and providing an atmosphere for students to practice or even learn a new language. If you interested in getting involved, please contact President Julienne LaChance (lachaj3@rpi.edu). WeR: the Spirit of Rensselaer Society was approved as a Union-affiliated organization. The Board discussed repairs to the aquarium in the second floor welcome lobby necessary to maintain a safe environment for our fish and coral. This proposal was tabled until October 24.

In coordination with the Division of Student Life, we will be hosting forums regarding the Performance Plans for each department under Student Life in the coming weeks. This is a great opportunity for students to ask questions and to give feedback regarding each department’s goals for the next two years. The first of these sessions will be held tonight at 6 pm in Union Room 3602. Please attend and help shape Student Life on campus in the upcoming years! Also on campus this week, the RPI Quiz Bowl will be hosting a tournament that allows students to compete against other college students from schools around the Capital Region like University of Albany, Union College, and Russell Sage College. It will be held on Saturday starting at 9 am throughout the Low Building. If you are interested in participating, please contact President Nimit Dhulekar (dhulen@rpi.edu). As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please contact me via e-mail (pu@rpi.edu), or stop by my office. My official office hours for this semester will be Wednesdays from 5–7 pm, but you can always stop in as long as I am there. Union Executive Board meetings are held every Wednesday night at 8 pm in Union Room 3606 and are open to the public. If you are interested in getting to know how your Union Activity Fee is managed, stop on by. Enjoy the rest of your week!
