Residence Education outlines housing procedure

Welcome back for the spring semester! The Residence Life staff hopes you had a restful break and are back, energized, and ready for the semester. We have begun gearing up for the room selection process for 2012-2013. There are several changes to the process, all designed to increase student satisfaction and maximize occupancy on campus. The Residence Life website (http://reslife.rpi.edu/) has lots of helpful information regarding room selection, including a frequently asked questions section and detailed information on each phase of the process. Key changes to room selection for 2012-2013 include:

• The return of Current Room Retention (formerly known as “Squatter’s Rights”). This is the process by which current juniors and seniors may elect to retain their current room for next year. Students wishing to select their room through the CR2 process should visit Residence Life February 13, 14, or 15 to sign their housing contract.

• Due in large part to upperclass students’ requests for more affordable apartment-style housing, Bryckwyck and Family RAHPs will be converted to undergraduate housing. These apartments are currently used to house married students and families, and will be phased into the available housing for juniors and seniors beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year. Students will be able to select these additional spaces during the Special Commons Process, with any remaining spaces being available for the Upper Class General Lottery. Tours of these apartments will be conducted—check the Residence Life website for specific dates and times.

For current freshmen (rising sophomores)—please read through the information regarding the Sophomore Lottery. This will be the phase of the room selection process in which you will participate. You do not need to sign up, but rather will automatically receive a lottery number via e-mail on February 29. If you are planning on living in your Greek house, you will need to complete the Greek Life Commons waiver form, available from Residence Life or through your Greek house.
