Engineers skin Bengals for victory

The Engineers took home the win in a scoring frenzy against Buffalo State this Saturday. Kayden White rushed for 147 yards, breaking the Engineer record for individual rushing yards for the first time since 2022.

While the Bengals relied on a series of long-shot passes to score, totaling 279 yards, Rensselaer would play the rushing game. Overall, the Engineers’ airtight defense would keep the momentum on their side and net them the win.

A 75-yard Bengal touchdown started the game after just fifteen seconds of play, putting the heat on Rensselaer from the very beginning. However, this would prove to be just one of two scoring plays for the Bengals, while the Engineers tallied seven touchdowns, two field goals, and one safety over the course of the game. Both White and quarterback Anthony DeMatteo rushed for two touchdowns in the game, with two others scored by RJ Encarnacion and second-string quarterback Frankie Garbolino in the first touchdown of his career. Gage Swanger also scored one for the Engineers, returning a 41-yard punt 70 yards back to the Bengals’ end zone.

While scoring for the Engineers slowed down in the second half, the defensive line held down the Engineers’ side of the field and gave up no points for Buffalo State. Defensively, Miles Lafferty led the charge for Rensselaer with eight total tackles, along with Matt Krauza and Nicholas Rossi, who each tallied seven. Cortez Garrett made a standout play in the fourth quarter when he intercepted a Buffalo State pass and returned it for a Rensselaer first down at the Bengals’ fifteen-yard line.

With the win, the Engineers pass the halfway point of their season with a 5-1 record and a 3-0 record in the Liberty League. Their next game will be this Saturday at Hilbert College, where they will hope to continue their streak. The box score for this game can be found here.
