Men's Lacrosse
The men’s lacrosse team has yet to end a winless skid, currently peaking at four games after losing 11-5 to the No. 18 St. Lawrence University Saints on Saturday afternoon. The win places the Saints at 9-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Liberty League, while the Red Hawks have fallen to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Despite taking a 4-3 lead in the first half with just under 13 minutes left to play before intermission, St. Lawrence was able to rally eight straight goals over the course of the next 40 minutes to take back the lead. Junior midfielder Brett Evans was able to cut the deficit down to six with a goal in the final two minutes of play, but it was not enough to overpower the nationally-ranked foes.
The Saints took a quick 2-0 lead at the start of the game with goals from senior midfielder Alex Slauson, but the Red Hawks were able to cut that lead in half with a goal from senior attack Josh Secora, who has recently returned to the lineup. St. Lawrence added one more goal before the end of the first quarter, but RPI responded with three straight goals from Secora and sophomore Nick Billy for the brief lead.
Leading the way for the Saints was Slauson with three goals and an assist, as well as freshman Caldwell Rohrbach with three goals and senior John Allen with two. For the Red Hawks, Secora’s presence was an obvious impact, netting two goals and an assist for three points. In addition, Evans tallied two of his own, and rookie Andrew Miller finished the day with two assists. Senior goaltender Ryan DeJory made 10 saves for RPI, and fellow senior Thomas Hollingsworth made seven stops between the pipes for the Saints.
RPI returns to action this Saturday as it travels to Union College to face the Dutchmen at 7 pm in its Liberty League season finale, followed by a game against SUNY Cobleskill at Harkness Field on Monday, with game time scheduled to also begin at 7 pm.
Women's Lacrosse
The Red Hawks’ three-game winning streak was snapped following a double-overtime loss at Vassar College this past Saturday. The loss places the women’s lacrosse team at 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League, while the win propels the Brewers to 8-6 overall and 3-4 within the conference.
Sophomore Brewer Sarah Warner saw a golden opportunity with 14 seconds remaining in the double-overtime session to put Vassar ahead once and for all. Classmate Allie Morgan controlled the draw, but had her shot saved by RPI junior goaltender Ariana Hood. After blocking a shot by Warner, Rensselaer collected the ball but turned it over to senior Christine Eaccarino, who found Warner in perfect positioning to score the game-winner.
In the first overtime session, RPI was able to tie the game back up at 12 in a last-ditch effort to stay in the game. After Eaccarino put the Brewers ahead by a goal a mere two minutes into overtime, RPI freshman Emma Albert’s shot nailed the post with 2:17 left to play. Sophomore Afton Marshall was able to gain control of the rebound and find the back of the net with 33 ticks left on the clock.
Leading up to the two-overtime contest, senior Emily Donowick notched three goals on the day for the Red Hawks, in addition to junior Sam Fennessey’s three of her own, sophomore Stephanie Caouette’s two, and senior Kerri Clark’s lone tally. Marshall also finished the day with two goals.
Hood had 16 saves in the narrow loss, while Brewers sophomore goalkeep Nicole Engelhardt stopped 12.
The Red Hawks will close out the regular season on the road against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Friday, with the opening faceoff starting at 4 pm.
