Midway through its season, the men’s tennis team has suffered tough spring weather, including snow piling up on the courts and now rains flooding the entire Northeast. But the men did get in two matches against Hartwick and St. Lawrence this past week even though Sunday’s lineup against Manhattanville in Purchase, N.Y., was postponed. Tuesday’s competition against Castleton State was also rained out.
The team does sport a winning record (3-2) despite a lack of any rhythm owing to the five missed contests, only two of which are to be made up.
Last Wednesday, RPI swept the doubles matches and won four of six singles matches on their way to defeating Hartwick, 7-2. Hartwick fell to 2-3 with the loss. Leading the way for the Engineers were freshmen Sam Tehven and Joe Shawky, who remained perfect as first doubles. Tehven was named Rookie of the Week by the Liberty League early this season. Ben Rosenthal, a sophomore, was also honored by the league earlier this year when he was named Performer of the Week.
On Saturday, the team hosted the St. Lawrence Saints in a disappointing loss. SLU won all six singles matches and all three doubles for a 9-0 victory. The Saints are now 8-4 overall.
The team will head to the Liberty League Championships in Geneva, N.Y., this weekend for two days of heady competition.
