The RPI swimming & diving teams took on Hartwick College at home on Sunday. The men won 124.5-116.5 while the women lost 137-106, splitting the dual meet with the Hawks. This is the third straight split in the first three meets of the season for Rensselaer.
On the men’s side, Dan Brocki had a very impressive performance. The sophomore won the 50 yard freestyle (22.25), the 100 freestyle (49.32), and proceeded to help the 400 medley relay team to victory with a time of 2:44.04. As a result of his brilliant effort, Brocki was named men’s Swimmer of the Week in the Liberty League, the first of three student-athlete awards won by RPI swimmers this week.
Junior Kevin Sheridan had an excellent day as well. Sheridan took home the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.24, and then the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.12.
In diving, Greg Derevianko won both the one meter (262.50 points) and three meter (240.83) events, which earned him the honor of the Liberty League’s men’s Diver of the Week. This is the second time this season that Derevianko has been named Diver of the Week, the first time being in the season opener when he set a Robison Pool record, scoring 276.52 points. He took home the same honor five times last season and was also an NCAA All-American.
For the women, Hartwick was led by freshman Erin Gray who won the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events. Senior Karel Schnebele, who won the 100 and 200 yard freestyle, gave the Hawks a nice boost as well.
Freshman Aimee Catroppa made a nice splash for the Red Hawks. Catroppa was named Liberty League’s women’s Rookie of the Week after winning all three events she participated in against Hartwick. The freshman helped the 400 medley relay team to victory, and won the 200 individual medley (2:18.30) in addition to the 200 butterfly (2:16.03).
Catroppa has been named Rookie of the Week twice this season, and is off to a very solid start in her career.
RPI returns to action this Sunday. The Red Hawks will hit the road for the first time this season and travel to Vassar for a dual meet with the Brewers.
