Introduction
Disappointment is the only way to describe the women’s tennis team’s performance of the last two weeks. After taking seventh at the Liberty League Championships just over a week ago, the women proceeded to also finish next to last at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament this weekend in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Red Hawks won just one match, as the second doubles of Florine Cannelle and Maggie LaManque took their opening round contest easily 8-1. The tandem then lost 8-4 to a tough Vassar group.
Vassar took the team competition easily, doubling their closest competitor, New York University’s, score.
The Red Hawks limped home to finish the season. After starting the season 6-0 Rensselaer produced a losing record of 3-4 in its last seven matches, finishing with a respectable 9-4 record overall and a 7-4 mark in league games.
The team will lose two of its top three singles players to graduation in seniors Cannelle and Rami Ishikawa. Replacements for Cannelle and Ishikawa will also need to be found for the first and second doubles teams.
Middle of the Pack
The Rensselaer men’s and women’s cross country teams found themselves in the same place they have been all season at the end of the Plansky Invitational hosted by Williams College this Saturday: lost in the middle.
The men’s squad took fifth (146) led by sophomore Greg Mariano landed in 12th place in the 6K run with a time of 20:26. The women came in sixth (219) behind Lauren Carter’s 20th place run of 16:26 over the 4K course.
Host team Williams swept the meet, winning both the men’s and women’s divisions with a score of 24 points.
RPI’s next meet will be this Saturday in the Saratoga Invite at Saratoga Spa State Park.
