Introduction
Freshman Jonathan Ornelas netted the game-winning goal in the waning seconds of overtime as the Red team defeated the White in the annual Red/White Scrimmage at Houston Field House on Saturday.
The White team, composed of mostly the juniors and seniors, got out to an early 4-1 lead after the first of two 25 minute halves, but allowed to the younger Red club to chip away at the margin, eventually leading to a 4-4 tie at the end of the second half.
Ornelas’ eventual game-winner came after junior captain Brad Farynuk was stripped of the puck near his own blue line, leaving Ornelas with a clear path to net. Ornelas struck quickly there after with a laser past the goaltender for the win.
Following the game, the men’s hockey team was joined by the women’s squad for the annual Skate with the Engineers. Students, faculty, and local residents all joined the team for a skate around the recently refinished ice. Players of both squads also chatted with and signed autographs for eager youngsters.
The Engineers will open the 2004-2005 season this weekend in Omaha, Neb. against Merrimack in the Maverick Stampede Classic. The game, which begins at 5 pm, will be broadcast on WRPI 91.5 FM. Depending on the game’s outcome against Merrimack, Rensselaer will be in the tournament championship or the consolation game. RPI will play either the University of Connecticut or the University of Nebraska-Omaha the following day.
2004 Hall of Famers Welcomed
The 2004 Hall of Fame Class was inducted in a ceremony at the Russell Sage Faculty and Staff Dining Hall Saturday afternoon. The inductees included Bridget LaNoir ’99, Cathy (Moran) Unruh ’96, Dan McGovern ’98, Jennifer (Swiderek) Thissell ’97, Dave Lohrman ’97, Bill Snyder ’97, and Adam Oates ’85.
Jeremy Thissell ’97 accepted on behalf of his wife. Each inductee was introduced by a speaker of their choice before giving a brief acceptance speech. Plans are still in the works to honor Oates, who was unable to attend, at one of the men’s hockey games this coming season.
Golf Team Finishes Fourth
Joe Choma and Greg West each shot an 80 to lead the Red Hawks to a fourth place finish in the Hobart Golf Invitational in Geneva, N.Y. Rensselaer’s 333 total score was 13 strokes behind the first place Hobart Orange squad.
Ed LaBombard shot an 83 and Brad Cone and Mark Wendell finished with 90s to round out the scoring for the Red Hawks.
RPI was playing somewhat short-handed since Dustin Pusatere was competing at the ECAC championship tournament and Mike Fee was unable to attend for personal reasons. Cone and West replaced the two in the line up.
Carter, Mariano lead XC
Lauren Carter and Greg Mariano were again the top finishers for RPI in the women’s and men’s division at the Liberty League Championship meet hosted by conference member Vassar College.
Carter’s time of 25:22 earned her 13th place in the women’s 6K event while Mariano took 15th in the men’s 8K.
The men’s team had a solid outing on the day coming in third behind St. Lawrence and Vassar. St. Lawrence swept the day taking first in both the men’s and women’s races.
The women’s squad came in distant and disappointing fifth as several girls struggled finishing with times over the 30 minute mark.
