Introduction

Stevens Institute of Technology finally figured out how to stop the Rensselaer women’s tennis team; they didn’t play them.

The Engineers, who currently remain undefeated with a 6-0 record, had their match with Stevens rained out this Saturday, but weather has been the only thing slowed RPI this season. Just ask the Hartwick women’s tennis team.

The Hawks battled Rensselaer Wednesday, making up a match that was postponed earlier in the season, in what proved to be the Engineers’ most challenging match of the season.

That said, RPI still convincingly defeated Hartwick 7-2. Rensselaer has now lost just three individual matches in six contests.

The Engineers garnered their sixth win by destroying Russell Sage 9-0 for the second time this year.

The Liberty League recognized Raimi Ishikawa and Emily Emerick for their outstanding contributions to the team over the past week.

Raimi Ishikawa of Mililani, Hawaii, the team’s number one singles player, received the Performer of the Week title after a 6-2, 6-2 win in singles over the Hawks’ Mara Tichy and an 8-6 victory in top doubles with Emerick in the Hartwick match.

Emerick, the team’s number two singles player, was named Rookie of the Week after winning 6-3, 6-0 against Amanda Gerich of Hartwick and 6-0, 6-0 versus Charlotte Hays of Russell Sage. Emerick has been honored by the Liberty League in three consecutive weeks.

Lydia Lindhult, in the number three slot, won both of her matches and was named Rookie of the Week two weeks ago.

Choma, golf take first

Joe Choma’s tournament-low 77 propelled the Rensselaer golf team to their first tournament victory of the season. The Engineers defeated SUNY Delhi by five strokes to win the Elmira College Invitational this weekend.

Choma, who was named the Liberty League’s Golf Performer of the Week, became the second medalist of the young season for RPI as he edged Erik Thomas of Delhi by one stroke. In early September, Rensselaer’s Ed Lombardo took the medal in the St. Lawrence Invitational, also by one stroke.

The remaining Engineers all performed well as Mike Fee, Dustin Pusatere, and Mark Wendell all tied for fourth, by shooting rounds of 80.

Cross-Country marches on

For the second straight week, the men’s and women’s Rensselaer cross country teams finished in identical spots in race standings.

This week at the Panther Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College, both teams finished third out of eight squads, improving their records to 6-3.

Sophomore Greg Mariano’s time of 28:01.0 was good enough for ninth overall on the men’s side while Lauren Carter finished 22nd in the women’s division with a time of 20:57.4.
