The women’s basketball team looked to continue their winning ways against Skidmore and Union. Coming off an overtime loss to Wesleyan Tuesday, they were looking to rebound against Skidmore on Friday.
Kristin Kaczynski led the way for the Red Hawks, pushing the team to a 38-19 halftime lead. The Thoroughbreds stormed back, outscoring Rensselaer 25-0 in the last eleven minutes of the game. The Rensselaer lead held, though, as the Red Hawks ended up winning the game 54-52.
Kaczynski was the top scorer for the Red Hawks, tallying 17 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Jo Alexander pulled down eight boards to lead the way.
Saturday, the Red Hawks traveled to Union to take on the powerhouse Dutchwomen. Union had only lost one game this season, and Rensselaer was clearly the underdog.
The women played hard, fighting to a one point halftime lead. Union refused to go away, and the Dutchwomen and the Red Hawks ended up knotted at 62-all.
The Red Hawks took a lead in the overtime and never looked back. The Dutchwomen pulled within two with a minute left, but that was the closest they would get. The Red Hawks made their foul shots and won the game 73-69.
Kaczynski again led the way for the Rensselaer women, scoring 20 points.
Caitlin Vestal had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Kaitlyn Saunders added 15 points as well.
The Red Hawks will close out their season with a weekend away at William Smith and Hamilton. Game times are 8 pm on Friday at William Smith and 2 pm on Saturday at Hamilton.
