Women’s soccer suffered a dismal weekend, losing both of their games and locking themselves out of post-season play.
Saturday’s game was the more depressing of the two as the Red Hawks went up against the William Smith Herons. The Herons dominated the first half, attempting seven shots on the goal. RPI goalie Andrea Hamill made a strong effort to stop the shots, recording six saves, but one managed to slip by at the 25:00 mark on a shot by Arin Balden with an assist by Steph Gridly, leaving William Smith up by one.
The Red Hawks make more of an effort in the second half, attempting three goals throughout the period. The Herons’ goalie Leah Cornwall stymied all these efforts, blocking all attempts. William Smith made another four attempts on the goal, efforts which bore two more goals for the team, one by Maria Paoff at 30:52, and another by Alyson Stachura on an assist by Kristin Falzarano at 10:49.
Friday’s game against the Hamilton Continentals wasn’t nearly so bleak. The first half heard no scoring from either side, though the Continentals made 13 shots on the goal. Hamill recorded an impressive 13 saves, preventing any scoring for the half. The Red Hawks weren’t nearly as aggressive, with the play being dominated by the Continentals throughout the game.
Midway through the second half the Red Hawks’ Liz Vitaliano managed to slip a goal past Continental goalie Jen Munez on an assist by Katie Fredlund at 26:40. The Continentals responded with a goal by Jessica Beeson at 25:48 on an assist by Anna Arnold to tie up the game. Forty-two seconds later the Elizabeth Roberts put in the game-winning goal for the Continentals, closing out the game 1-2.
The rough weekend dropped the Red Hawks to 9-4-1 overall and 4-3-0 for conference play. They will play again on Saturday against Plattsburg state at 7 pm.
