The men’s tennis team had an excellent week, winning all three of their dual meets in preparation for the UCAA Championships this upcoming weekend.
Last Wednesday, the Engineers swept the Hartwick Hawks, 7-0. All of the RPI players won their matches in straight sets, and co-captain Chris Laptik did not even allow his opponent to win a single game. Only the first doubles match was particularly close, with Steve Matthews and Mike Heligman ekeing out an 8-6 win.
Friday’s meet at Clarkson was more of the same. RPI won the meet 6-1, and fourth singles player Jon Addison nearly won his match as well—he won the first set 6-1 and sent the second set into a tiebreaker. Matthews and Ben Haynes continued their dominance, winning their singles matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 respectively.
The St. Lawrence Saints presented a much tougher challenge. Matthews, Haynes, and Heligman won the first three singles matches, but St. Lawrence swept the bottom three, leaving the match hinging on the doubles matches. The Engineers won all three to hold on to a 4-3 victory.
The Engineers, now 8-2, have one more dual meet today at home against Castleton before heading back to St. Lawrence for the conference championships on Saturday and Sunday.
