Both the men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams started this season with wins over Union College on Sunday. The women triumphed by a score of 91-31, while the men won 83-24.

The women had individual winners in every event except the 50-meter hurdles and the high jump. RPI throwers Kate Worden and Jo Alexander won the weight throw and the shot put, respectively, with distances of 11.7 and 11.35 meters. Allison Benson won the pole vault for RPI with a top height of 10 feet, and Melissa Van Alstine and Laura Rogers took the top spots in the long jump and the triple jump, respectively. Runners Danika Patrick, Katie Fredlund, Michelle Fisher, Cara O’Toole, Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran, and Jenn Amyot all won their respective events as well.

On the men’s side, Dwaine Alleyne and Derek McGough each won two events. Alleyne took the top spot in the 50-meter hurdles with a time of 7.3 seconds and in the triple jump with a distance of 13.30 meters, and McGough won the long jump with a mark of 6.4 meters and the 45-meter dash with a time of 5.61 seconds.

Other runners winning their events were Paul Salasznyk in the 300, Max Zujewski in the 500, Doug Dukes in the 1000, Mark Jensenius in the 1500, and David Hurtado in the 5000. In addition, Jeff Banks’ pole vault of 12.5 feet was the best at the meet, and Mike Johnson won the weight throw with a toss of 12.3 meters.

The teams continue their season with a triple meet on Saturday in Williamstown, Mass., against Williams College and MIT.
