Swimming

Sophomore Ben Fell was named to the Verizon Academic All-American College Division Men’s At-Large Second Team. The selections are made by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Fell finished second in the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke, and the 400-yard freestyle at the UCAA Championship meet.

Fell was also a member of both the 400-yard and the 200-yard medley relay teams that also finished second. Fell advanced to the NCAA National Meet and placed 12 in the 100-yard backstroke. Fell also broke three individual school records and was a part of four relay records. Fell is a civil engineering major with a minor in psychology and currently carries a 4.0 GPA.

Fell has also been chosen as a member of the UCAA and NY State All-Academic teams.and was awarded an RPI Founder’s Award for excellence

Baseball

Outfielder Travis Teeter was named the UCAA Hitter of the Week for the week ending April 16. During that time he went 12 for 20 at the plate and had 11 RBI. In addition, Teeter scored 9 runs and had three stolen bases. Among his 12 hits were a home run, a triple, and five doubles.

Pitcher and outfielder Pat Hughes earned UCAA Pitcher of the Week honors for his performances last week. Hughes won two games, while limiting opponents to 1 run over 11.2 innings. He also held his opponents to a .231 average during that span.

Outfielder Brian Marine garnered the UCAA Rookie of the Week award after hitting .500 and collecting 8 RBI. Among his eight hits were three doubles and two home runs. Marine also scored 6 runs.

Softball

Pitcher Shannon Smith was the UCAA Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 9. During the span, Smith pitched a complete game shutout in addition to three and two-thirds innings of relief work. In the two appearances, she totaled 12 strikeouts and allowed only seven hits.

Lacrosse

Rensselaer student athletes swept the men’s lacrosse awards for the week ending April 9.

Attacker Tom Terzulli received the UCAA Player of the Week award after he tallied 6 goals and 11 assists. Goaltender Matt Moog grabbed the UCAA Goaltender of the Week after stopping 37 of 52 shots. Attacker Lucas Ruglis racked up the UCAA Rookie of the Week after he notched 4 goals, an assist, and three ground balls.

Men’s Track

Derek McGough landed the UCAA Track Athlete of the Week honor for the week of April 9. McGough won the 100-meter (11.26 sec) and the long jump (6.52 M) at the Engineers’ Cup.

Bill Monette earned the UCAA Field Athlete of the Week award for the past two weeks. During the first week, Monette won the shot put (15.55 m), and the discus (50.24 m), and finished third in the hammer (49.49 m).

During his second week, Monette led the Engineers to a victory at the UCAA Championship meet. At that meet, Monette was named the UCAA Most Outstanding Field Event Performer as he won the shot put (15.58 m), the discus (51.02 m), and took second in the hammer (52.04 m).

Women’s Track

Melissa VanAlstine was named the UCAA Field Athlete of the Week last week after she won two events at the Engineers’ Cup. VanAlstine won the long jump (4.91 m) and the triple jump (10.13 m) to lead RPI to a second-place finish.

This week, Melissa Coppola was named the UCAA Field Athlete of the Week. Coppola won both the javelin (30.63 m) and the shot put (11.13 m), helping the Engineers to a second-place finish.
