Hall of Fame

Five former student athletes were selected to be part of the RPI Athletic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2001 members are men’s basketball player Aaron Bedard ’91, women’s basketball player Kim Kalajenein ’90, men’s hockey player Dino Serra ’77, football player Mike Soucy ’95, and men’s swimmer Al Stokke ’43.

When he graduated in 1991, Bedard was the all-time career leader in assists (362), was third in scoring (1107), third in steals (208), and tenth in rebounding (472). Bedard was also a two-time All-Conference selection as well as the Conference Player of the Year in 1990-91. Selected as team captain his junior and senior years, he led those teams to a combined record of 38-14. The 1990-91 team, generally considered the best in school history, finished with a 20-5 record that included an 18 game winning streak and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Kalajanein, a guard, played in 92 games for Rensselaer. During those 92 games she averaged 7.8 points with 314 assists and 97 steals. Kalajanein was named the team’s Most Valuable Player after her freshman year when she was third on the team in scoring (11.1), first in assists (78), and first in steals (45). Over the next three years she would lead the team in assists and was among the leaders in both points and steals. Over her four years, RPI compiled a 60-37 record.

Serra was a member of the men’s hockey team for four years and was named co-captain during his senior year. During his final campaign, he was the team’s leading scorer with 23 goals and 46 assists. His 46 assists that year still rank as the fifth-best in school history for a single season. Serra finished third in points during his junior year with 21 goals and 23 assists and as a freshman collected 12 goals and 23 assists on his way to earning Freshman Athlete of the Year for 1973-74. Despite being injured for most of his sophomore year, Serra still finished his career with 102 assists, 11th best in school history, and had 164 points, placing him 12th in that category.

Mike Soucy is widely considered the best defensive end to ever play for RPI. Following a freshman year in which he played significant minutes, he went on to start for the next three years and was named captain during his junior and senior seasons. Soucy was twice earned All-American status and was selected All-Conference and All-League three times. He also earned the team’s defensive MVP twice and holds three school records. These include: sacks in a game (6.5), sacks in a season (14), and sacks in a career (34.5). Additionally, he led the team with 93 tackles as a sophomore and had 135 primary and 119 assisted hits for 254 total tackles in his career. Following his senior season, Soucy was chosen as RPI’s Athlete of the Year.

Al Stokke is often remembered as the "ironman of the team," for having swum both distances and relays in the early 1940s. He held the school records in the 200 and 400 and was the team’s leading scorer for two seasons. Stokke set several records in other schools’ pools and was named captain during his senior season. As a junior, he was also selected as Grand Marshal.
