The RPI men’s swimming and diving team had a good showing at the Henry Kumpf Men’s Invitational hosted by RPI last Saturday. Seven teams competed in the invitational: Ithaca, Le Moyne, Cortland, New Paltz, Clarkson, Vassar, and RPI. Overall, the RPI men defeated the latter four while losing to Ithaca and Le Moyne. The team was optimistic about their performance given that they had recently returned from a ten-day winter training trip in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The RPI men had a number of top scoring individual and relay performances. The 400-yard medley relay made up of Ben Fell, Mark Cassalia, Matt Anderson, and Ian Stith had a time of 3:45.57. Stith also did well in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.13 and in the 50-yard freestyle with 22.60. Fell also faired well in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.83 and the 200-yard freestyle with 1:48.30. Anderson performed well in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:03.28 and the 200-yard individual medley with 2:08.60.
The divers took first, second, and third place in three-meter diving against Le Moyne; Zach Lingley scored 211.0, Eric Internicola 131.35, and Randy Lafleur 128.40. In one-meter diving Lingley took first, Lafleur second, and Internicola fourth.
The men’s and women’s teams will be busy this week with two meets; both men and women will be competing against Union on Wednesday, and the women will be hosting the RPI Invitational at the Robison Pool on Saturday.
