Rapist sentenced
Last month, the rapist who attacked an RPI student last December near the Heffner Alumni House was sentenced to 27 years in prison. George Terry of Troy pleaded guilty in May to endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of first degree rape.
At the sentencing hearing, Gallagher Health Center health educator Theresa Kersch read a statement on behalf of the RPI student victimized. According to Patricia DeAngelis, Rensselaer County district attorney, the student was very concerned about coming forward.
Terry apologized for his crimes, which DeAngelis told Capital News 9 were among the most violent she has prosecuted. The District Attorney’s office also said that as part of his sentence, Terry would not be eligible for parole.
Troy district passed
The Troy City Council voted last month to create a Business Improvement District in downtown Troy. Six council members voted for the creation of the district while two voted against it and one member recused herself.
The City Council vote followed a 30-day public comment period during which businesses in the area that would be affected could voice objections to creating the district. If a majority had objected, the district could not have been created, but less than a fifth of the more than 300 businesses voiced any objections.
The district’s creation means that commercial business owners in the area will pay additional city property taxes. In return, work will be done on the sidewalks, streets, and the general area to make the district look more attractive and draw both customers and new businesses to the area.
Simon leaves position
Professor Iftekhar Hasan has been serving as interim dean of the Lally School of Management and Technology since Denis Simon left his dean position on June 28. In an e-mail to the campus community announcing Simon’s departure, President Shirley Ann Jackson said that RPI would begin an international search for a new dean for the school.
Hasan has been on the Lally school finance faculty since 2002. It is under his lead that Lally will begin offering its new MBA curriculum this fall.
According to Jackson, Simon accepted a position as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Neil D. Levin Graduate Institute of International Relations and Commerce. His new position is part of a new State University of New York program in New York City.
New treasurer named
On May 17, Walé F. Adeosun joined RPI in the newly created position of Treasurer and Chief Investment Officer. He is a chartered financial analyst and received his MBA concentrating in finance from the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University.
In this new position, Adeosun will work with Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer Virginia C. Gregg, the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees, and President Jackson. He will work on managing RPI’s assets and liabilities such as the endowment and pension plan investments.
According to Jackson, “As the Institute expands, guided by The Rensselaer Plan, the complexity of our investments grows with it. Walé Adeosun’s experience in major corporate and nonprofit organizations will enhance our existing financial management practices and infrastructure to help us reach our long-term business goals.”
