RPI athletic honors
Since the 2000-2001 school year, RPI has had 15 athletes honored as National Academic All Americans by The College Sports Information Directors of America. This number of honorees is tied for 10th in the country and third within Division III.
The awards are given out to athletes in 12 sports for their academic and athletic performance. At RPI, awards have been given to members of the football, men’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, track and field, and women’s soccer teams.
The University of Nebraska has had the most Academic All Americans, 28, in the past three years. Ken Ralph, the institute’s athletics director, said the achievement was tremendous and pride-worthy.
Anti-alcohol CD-ROM
The State University of New York at Albany has begun distributing a CD-ROM as part of its program to reduce underage drinking by its students. The CD-ROMs began being used across the country last year and were made by Century Choice, a non profit organization discouraging underage drinking. The effort was sponsored by many distilleries.
Aimed at college students, the U.S. Department of Education also contributed to the project. On each CD-ROM is hours of video, including interactive situations in which the choices the student makes determines how the video will play out.
The CD-ROM itself is called Alcohol 101 Plus and students have said that the situations are quite realistic. Administration at University at Albany does not expect the new CD campaign to eliminate underage drinking, but it hopes it will help reduce it.
Alleged stalker indicted
Gary G. Rullo, the man arrested last month for allegedly stalking President Jackson, was indicted last Friday. The 56-year-old Delaware man was charged with stalking and aggravated harassment under hate crime statutes.
Rullo was arrested last month on campus by Public Safety as he was caught hanging up “Wanted” posters seeking information about a conspiracy to kill him that he alleged Jackson was a part of. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.
Having been held in the Rensselaer County jail since his arrest, prosecutors are alleging that Rullo came to campus to stalk Jackson. Jackson’s spokesperson said she had no comment on the proceedings.
2003 Family Weekend
This Friday through Sunday, the Office of the First Year Experience will host the annual Family Weekend. The administration, schools, and departments will be holding several programs over the weekend for both families and students.
On Friday, a tour of Troy will be offered, the RPI Players will perform Up the Down Staircase, and the Russell Sage Dining Hall will have an Oktoberfest Family Buffet for dinner.
Among Saturday’s events are a legacy reception, athletic events, and RPI’s “Fall Fest.” The Communiversity event will be held near the Student Union at the corner of 15th Street and Sage Avenue.
Family Weekend will culminate on Sunday with the Honors Convocation being held at 11 am in the Armory and a performance by the U.S. Continental Jazz Band.
