In remembrance

In order to commemorate the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the Office of Religious Affairs has organized a memorial service on September 11 at 10 am in the Armory. Speakers will include President Shirley Ann Jackson, Grand Marshal Chris Mather, President of the Union Zachary Ament, and the Rensselaer chaplains. To permit both students and faculty to share in this event, classes will be canceled from 10 am to noon.

Ricketts fire

On Wednesday on the fourth floor of the Ricketts building, suffered a fire. The fire broke out when a staff member of environmental services emptied a trash can into his garbage cart which went up in flames. The lab technician was unsuccessful in his attempt to put out the fire.

At least seven public safety officers responded to the scene along with two Troy Fire Department trucks, and one ambulance. The building was immediately evacuated. The lab technician was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

According to Vice President of Administration Cauld Rounds, there is cosmetic damage to the building. Some hanging posters were ignited the fire was extinguished quickly. The fire department cleaned up a “powdery residue” leftover from the fire. The building was re-occupied later in the afternoon. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Latinas celebrated

Alianza Latina will be kicking off Latino Heritage Month on September 12 at 7 pm in Mother’s with writer/orator Linda Nieves Powell, who will be performing her monologue, “Yo Soy Latina!” A traditional Spanish meal will also be served to add authenticity to the event. Future events include a party on September 13 in the Rensselaer Union, and the annual date auction the proceeds of which will be donated to a local charity on September 20. All Aboard

On Sunday at 5 pm, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences will be sponsoring their fourth annual Welcome Cruise Down the Hudson. The cruise will take place on the Captain JP Cruise Line, for all new and returning undergraduates, giving students a chance to commune with one another over dinner and music.
