Two Rensselaer faculty members have recently announced their plans to retire: Faye Duchin, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Andrew Lemnios, interim vice president of Rensselaer at Hartford.

Duchin has served as dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences since 1996.

"I think she’s done a lot for the school. I’m sorry to see her stepping down," said Michael Kalsher, chair of the Department of Cognitive Sciences.

Duchin will remain as dean until a search committee has selected a replacement. After retiring, she plans to remain a professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and continue her economics research.

As a faculty member of the Department of Economics, Duchin’s research has focused on strategies for economic development trade, with an emphasis on lifestyle options, technological change, and environmental damage.

Prior to joining the faculty of RPI, Duchin was the director of the Institute of Economic Analysis at New York University from 1985 to 1996 and the associate director from 1981 to 1985.

Duchin has published four books on the subject of economics: Structural Economics: Measuring Change in Technology, Lifestyles, and the Environment; The Future of the Environment: Ecological Economics and Technological Change; The Future Impact of Automation on Workers; and Military Spending: Facts and Figures Worldwide Implications and Future Outlook.

She holds a B.A. in experimental psychology from Cornell University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Duchin has been a fellow at United Nations University in Tokyo since 1994 and a professor at Rensselaer since 1996.

Lemnios has served as interim vice president of the Rensselaer at Hartford campus since November of 1999.

His retirement will take effect June 30, 2002. A search committee has already begun the process of locating a replacement for him.

"The time has come when I must pass the torch to new leadership for Rensselaer at Hartford," Lemnios told Campus News.

"After much thought and with mixed emotions, I think now is the appropriate time. I would like to spend more time with my family—my wife, children, and grandchildren."

Lemnios joined the RPI faculty in 1993 as a clinical professor in the department now known as the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering. He has taught classes at both the Troy and Hartford campuses and was previously the director of the Rotorcraft Technology Center in Troy.

Before he came to Rensselaer, Lemnios served as vice president of research and technology at Kaman Aerospace Corporation.

Lemnios also has been a member of a number of technical advisory committees for the Army, NASA, Georgia Institute of Technology, the FAA, the University of Maryland, and RPI and is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics as well as an honorary fellow of the American Helicopter Society.
