Chatter honored
Rensselaer’s Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship has named Mukesh Chatter ’82, founder, president, and CEO of Axiowave, the William F. Glasser ’53 Rensselaer Entrepreneur of the Year.
Chatter will deliver a keynote address at 9 am on September 21 in DCC Room 308, following a reception in his honor.
Past recipients of the entrepreneurial award include Paul Severino ’69, the founder of Wellfleet Communications; Curtis Priem ’82, the founder of NVIDIA; Nancy Mueller, the founder of Nancy’s Specialty Foods; William Mow ’59, the founder of Bugle Boy Industries; and Warren Bruggeman ’46, former vice president and general manager of GE’s Nuclear Business Operations.
RPI to hold festival
The second annual Fall Fest, a free Communiversity event sponsored by RPI, will be held from 2 to 8 pm at the Approach.
The festival will feature musical performances by Chris Thomas King’s 21st Century Blues, Odetta, Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson, Doc Scanlan, the Boston Horns, and RPI’s Jazz Ensemble.
Mimes, clowns, face painting, dish twirlers, and an open house at the Junior Museum will provide entertainment for children.
The Physics Magic Show hosted by Philip Casabella, associate chair of the physics department, will also be a part of the event.
Research supported
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded RPI a $2.5 million grant for the advancement of fundamental research in terascale computing technologies.
The grant is Rensselaer’s share as a major partner in the newly established Center for Terascale Simulation Tools and Technologies.
Terascale simulation makes use of computers that are capable of performing trillions of operations per second to study complex scientific 3D visualization problems.
The research center plans to have $16 million in total funding.
Rankings released
RPI’s undergraduate school of engineering has been ranked 17th in the top 50 schools in the nation by the 2002 edition of U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges. The full rankings can be found online at http:/www.usnews.com/.
RPI’s ranking of 17th tied it with Texas A&M and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The Institute’s overall ranking, 48, tied it with Pepperdine, Texas A&M, the University of California-Santa Barbara, and the University of Texas-Austin. Last year the Institute had been ranked overall at 49.
RPI was also ranked 42 in the top 50 "best values" in the country, sharing the position with Clark University, St. Louis University, and Tulane University.
