This Saturday the Union Programming and Activities Committee will be putting on UPAC Mainstage, a free showcase event that integrates entertainment from UPAC Comedy, Concerts, Cinema, Lights, Sound, and Mother’s.
UPAC Mainstage will feature comedian Jamie Lissow in the McNeil Room from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, folk-singer Roy Atkinson in Mother’s from 8 pm to 10:30 pm, the student band Within Reach in the McNeil Room from 10 pm to midnight, and film shorts—More, In the Box, Passengers, and Hate—in between performances.
The purpose of the showcase event is to attract new members to join the UPAC organizations and more audiences to attend UPAC events.
“UPAC Mainstage is an event designed to provide entertainment to RPI students, while also publicizing the UPAC committees and encouraging students to join Union clubs,” said Darren Schreiber ’03, co-chair of UPAC Concerts.
“We’re basically hoping to get the word out that UPAC is here, and we’re looking for people to get involved,” said Vivian Cheng ’03, chair of UPAC Mother’s.
Anyone who attends the noon UPAC Lights and Sound training course will be eligible to help out in the evening’s performances.
Within Reach, an acoustic rock band, was the winner of last fall’s Battle of the Bands competition. The band, whose musical inspirations range from rock to classical and jazz, has been influenced by well-known artists John Coltrane and the Dave Matthews Band.
Jamie Lissow, a 24-year-old New York native now residing in Los Angeles, has been called “the best writer since Seinfeld” and “Adam Sandler without the guitar” by critics. He has appeared on Comedy Central, contributed writing to Tonight Show, and has performed with comedians Norm McDonald and Chris Rock.
Roy Atkinson, a folk artist from Bucksport, Maine, performs at RPI every year during a weekend that the Players perform. He is a very skilled guitarist and is well known for his interaction with his audience and expressive voice.
