Music For The Morning After is the title of the new Pete Yorn album. The question is, the morning after what? After listening to the entire CD three times during the course of this weekend, I realized that it could really be the soundtrack for the morning after anything. Waking up on the weekend is never easy, especially when your head is pounding, your roommate is snoring, and the sun is clawing at your eyes through the half drawn shades. Pete Yorn’s Music For The Morning After just helps you get through all of the pains of the early morning, even if your early morning is really mid-afternoon.
Pete Yorn is a musician playing out of clubs and gigs on the West Coast. He looks like he belongs in Oasis, but his lyrics and rhythms definitely do not. He combines good down-to-earth lyrics with a folky, yet soulful, set of guitar and drum ensembles.
This CD is loaded with very laid-back songs, but it really does throw some strong guitar and drum beats into every song. The CD has a kind of Matchbox Twenty sound mixed with Third Eye Blind, then spliced with some extra chill factor. The song that really catches your attention the first time you hear it is "For Nancy." This song tells the story of a guy pouring out his heart for a girl. I know you are thinking, "Well, that’s most songs in the universe," but this song is different. It combines good lyrics about relationships, but it does not get mushy and sappy. Also, the music is fast paced and really carries the lyrics nicely.
Another song on the CD that helps you through the morning after is called "Strange Condition." The guitar riffs sound like a familiar sixties-type song. However, they add the harmonica and a synthesizer to add some really sweet sounds. The lyrics are good and relate really well to the music. The song just matches up very nicely with the whole album. The thing with this album that surprised me was that every song sounds so different, and yet they flow so well together.
I highly recommend you purchase Pete Yorn’s new CD, Music For The Morning After. It is such a great soundtrack for the morning after. Yorn also has his own website at http://www.peteyorn.com/, where you can find out about his current tour. Pete Yorn will also be on MTV2 on April 28 from 10 am to 11 am to play his favorite videos by other artists as well as some of his own.
