Rensselaer in Brief Flu shots offered New York State’s health commissioner, Dr. Antonia Novello, recently urged residents to get the flu shot to avoid coming down with influenza, which kills around 2,000 people in New York annually.
The Student Health Center is administering the shots this week on campus. Shots are free for students and $10 for faculty and staff.
The shots will be given today at the Russell Sage Dining Hall from 11 am until 1 pm and at the Commons from 4 pm until 6:30 pm. Tomorrow, shots will be dispensed at the Union from 11 am until 1 pm and at BARH from 4 pm until 6:30 pm. On Friday, the last day that shots are planned to be given, the shots will be administered in the DCC Great Hall from 11 am until 1:30 pm. Folsom bridge exhibit The Folsom Library is currently hosting a traveling exhibit entitled “Williamsburg Bridge at 100: Spanning a Century of Change.” The exhibit opened yesterday and will be open all month.
A member of RPI’s Class of 1868, Leffert Buck, was the chief engineer for the project which had a goal of building a structurally sound bridge that was both longer and less expensive to build than the Brooklyn Bridge.
The exhibit focuses on construction of the bridge, reconstruction, and its workers. It belongs to the Brooklyn Arts Council. Powered by the wind RPI has recently tied a new wind turbine into its power grid. Located off of Sunset Terrace on the campus’s east side, the 10 kilowatt turbine has three blades.
The turbine project is being funded by both the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and RPI. The idea started with the senior thesis of Jim Adams who graduated in 2002 and now works for an energy consulting firm in Albany called AWS Scientific.
A tower that can be lowered for student and faculty access was built into the turbine so that people can observe how the turbine works. In addition, a website is planned to monitor the energy production of the turbine. |
