Chemistry chair named
Robert Bailey, professor of organic chemistry, has been named the interim chair of chemistry to fill the vacancy created by Tom Apple’s promotion to dean of graduate education.

Applications requested
The Order of Omega Greek Honor Society is requesting Rensselaer students to submit applications for membership in the honor society.

Membership is open to all students in the junior and senior classes who are currently in the greek system, carry a cumulative GPA above the all-greek average, and have shown commendable campus leadership.

The honor society is also accepting nominations for honorary initiatives. All applications and nominations must be submitted to the Dean of Students Office on the fourth floor of the Troy Building by October 23 at noon.

Alumni honored
Eight alumni will be inducted into RPI’s Alumni Hall of Fame in a ceremony this Friday. Their accomplishments will be etched in windows that line The Great Hall in the DCC.

The 2001 inductees are Ray Tomlinson, the inventer of e-mail, Class of 1963; Alan Vorhees, a world-renowned city planner, Class of 1947; Eben Horsford, considered "the father of American food technology," Class of 1838; steel pioneer John Winslow, elected chair of the Rensselaer board of trustees in 1865; western railroad pioneer Edwin Crocker, Class of 1833; transcontinental railroad visionary Theodore Dehone Judah, Rensselaer student in 1837; fire-safety pioneer Frederick Grinnell, Class of 1855; and premier publisher of scientific and technical books William Wiley, Class of 1866.

Conference planned
The Archer Center for Student Leadership Development is holding its annual leadership conference on September 29 from 8:30 am to 4 pm in the Rensselaer Union. This year’s conference, sponsored by Lockheed Martin, will focus on the theme "Leading Change in a Wide Open World." Attendance at the conference is open to all Rensselaer undergraduate and graduate students who pre-register.

At the conference, students will have the opportunity to choose from morning and afternoon educational sessions run by Lockheed Martin employees. Topics that will be discussed include "Virtual Team Leadership," "So You Want To Be the Boss," and "Diversity: The Junk in Your Trunk."

Students can also play the Lockheed Martin Ethics Challenge Game, which encourages players to analyze ethical scenarios and determine the best alternative.

"The Archer Center is so proud of this conference because it offers students the unique opportunity to network with these executives while experiencing leadership training from corporate professionals," says Linda McCloskey, director of the Archer Center.
