Campaign sign vandal caught by RNE

GM WEEK CAMPAIGN SIGNS ONCE AGAIN COVER the CII’s pillars and walls after a student ripped down dozens of candidate signs on the building and on the footbridge.
The Rules and Elections Committee of the Student Senate, in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety, successfully apprehended a vandal on campus last week. The student was not a candidate in the upcoming elections but felt that the act was making a political statement.

Rensselaer in Brief
Limited parking
The Troy City Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Streets will be carrying out regular street cleaning activities in the area during the next few weeks. As a result, parking on 15th Street and Sage Avenue will be prohibited between the hours of 7 and 9 am. Any vehicle parked on these streets during these hours will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Any questions can be directed to the Bureau at 270-4579 or 270-1115.

Millennium Egg
The famous “Golden Millennium Egg,” handcrafted by Troy jeweler John Romanation to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of Christianity in his native Ukraine, will be on display from April 6 through 12 at Romanation Jewelers on 48 Third Street. The 18 karat gold egg is the product of four years of meticulous handcrafting and is decorated with 441 precious stones and delicate etchings.

The upper portion of the egg has precisely etched outlines of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev and the Cathedral of Saint George in L’viv. The egg also boasts a reproduction of coins produced over 1000 years ago bearing a trident marking, the traditional symbol of The Ukraine. The middle of the egg is decorated with a ring of gold adorned with 46 diamonds and surrounded by triangle and diamond patterns made of 146 rubies and 144 sapphires. Other designs include grape clusters decorated with 32 green jade and 38 garnet jewels. Inside the egg are miniatures of the two cathedrals from the exterior, crafted from ivory.

The event is open to the public. If you would like more information on the event, contact John Betterly or James Cook at 272-0643.

Crossgates mocked
Almost a month after a man was arrested at Crossgates Mall for refusing to take off a t-shirt that read “Give Peace a Chance,” the New York Civil Liberties Union has erected a billboard near the mall at a cost of $4,000. The sign reads “Welcome to the Mall. You have the right to remain silent.”

The sign is intended to bring attention to a new bill introduced by Long Island Democratic Assemblyman Steven Englebright that would make it illegal for malls to restrict what patrons can wear and would also require malls to allow small demonstrations to take place inside, provided the demonstrators secure the appropriate permits.

The bill is an attempt to convince people that malls have become the “village greens” of the modern age and should be open for public discussion.
