Rensselaer in Brief
52 UCAA stars
The picks for the winter All-Academic team for the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association have been announced, and RPI is leading the league with 52 honored athletes. The next highest school, St. Lawrence, had 38.

To be considered for the honor, student-athletes must have at least sophomore standing in both athletics and academics, along with a minimum GPA of 3.2.

The sports included in this honor are men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.

For a complete list of Rensselaer’s UCAA All-Academic student-athletes, go to the athletics web page at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/athletics/.

Stop DWI campaign
The Rensselaer Residence Hall Association is sponsoring a “Stop DWI” campaign on the RPI campus all this week in order to help solve the problem of underage drinking on this campus and in the city of Troy.

Their campaign will be threefold. First, they will join with the Hudson Valley AAA to place a vehicle in the Commons area to stimulate conversation among students. A pledge card will be the second part, offering students the chance to promise to not drink and drive, not get in a car with someone who has been drinking, and teach their friends about the dangers of drinking and driving.

The third and most important part will take place tonight with a two hour seminar entitled “RHA Against DWI.”

Senior Ashok Mandava has led the effort to bring together campus and community groups such as the vice president for student life, the campus Health Education Office, the State Liquor Authority, and Rensselaer County Stop DWI. The event will last from 7 to 9 pm in DCC 308.

GM Week events
Planning for Grand Marshal Week 2003, a week of celebrations and student elections, has already begun. It is April 4-11 and the GM Week Committee is asking all campus organizations, departments, and offices to contact them about any activities planned for that week so that these events can be included in the schedule.

The deadline for submitting event information to the committee is February 28, and schedule space is given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Event forms are available at http://gmweek.union. rpi.edu/EventForm.html. Any questions can be sent to Arielle Doerle at 276-8688.

College Avenue closed
In order to allow more easy access for truck deliveries to RPI construction sites, and to allow much needed maintenance to the road, sections of College Ave will be closed to parking and through traffic begining Monday, February 10, and will stay in effect for 30 days.

The ban will effect the areas of this road from the Rensselaer “B” gate to its intersection with 8th Avenue.

RPI has asked that students not park in the surrounding neighborhoods, and instead make use of the Houston Field House lots and the Red Hawk Shuttle service, both of which are free to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

For more information, contact the Parking Office at 276-6616 or parking@rpi.edu.

Conservation logo
The Rensselaer Energy Conservation Program is holding a design contest to find a new logo for their organization. The winning designer will receive a check for $100, and runners up will receive prizes such as compact fluorescent bulbs and gift certificates to local businesses.

Entries and questions should be directed to Shawn Shaw at shaws@rpi.edu or 276-2036. All logos must be submitted in JPEG format before March 14 and must be easily readable at four inches by four inches. All designs should include the words “Rensselaer” and “Energy Conservation Program.” The program’s current logo can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/cpfd/conservation/.
