Rensselaer in Brief
In remembrance
In order to commemorate the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the Office of Religious Affairs has organized a memorial service on September 11 at 10 am in the Armory. Speakers will include President Shirley Ann Jackson, Grand Marshal Chris Mather, President of the Union Zachary Ament, and the Rensselaer chaplains. To permit both students and faculty to share in this event, classes will be canceled from 10 am to noon.

Ricketts fire
On Wednesday on the fourth floor of the Ricketts building, suffered a fire. The fire broke out when a staff member of environmental services emptied a trash can into his garbage cart which went up in flames. The lab technician was unsuccessful in his attempt to put out the fire.

At least seven public safety officers responded to the scene along with two Troy Fire Department trucks, and one ambulance. The building was immediately evacuated. The lab technician was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

According to Vice President of Administration Cauld Rounds, there is cosmetic damage to the building. Some hanging posters were ignited the fire was extinguished quickly. The fire department cleaned up a “powdery residue” leftover from the fire. The building was re-occupied later in the afternoon. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
