Rensselaer in Brief Discrimination at Union E-mails sent to a Union College student in the last few weeks brought back painful memories of an era commonly thought to be firmly in the past. Junior Aldumen Gomez received messages threatening his life, insulting his heritage, ridiculing him for losing an election, and making allusions to a return to “the separate but equal thing.” The messages were signed Karl Kinsey Keller, a reference to the Ku Klux Klan.
The incidents have brought a storm of anger within the campus. While some are critical of the administration and its response to the issue, the general sentiment is one of simple outrage, sparking a rally Friday afternoon that was attended by about 300 students and community members.
Gomez and a friend have withdrawn from the school, saying that they no longer feel safe. They plan to continue their education elsewhere. Student Senate update Last week’s Senate meeting opened with the confirmation of Natalie Schloeder ’10 to the Executive Board as the freshman class representative. While some committees’ activities were rather slow for the week, the committee reports generally focused on the committees for: Student Life; Campus Communications; Facilities, Finance, and Advancement; and Academic Affairs.
The Student Life Committee, chaired by Sadra Azizi ’09, mainly focused on finalizing everything for last week’s “Pasta with The President,” as well as planning for the dance for GM Week. Chaired by graduate senator Mark Andrews, the CC Committee discussed the sign policy of campus after an $8 sign for “Pasta with the President” was taken down. The FFA Committee, run under co-chairs Dan Horvath ’08 and August Fietkau ’08, reported that it is running on track within its budget. The committee also hopes to straighten out the card access policies on campus, as well as evaluate energy conservation on campus.
Work on the shuttle tracking system continues and a number of fire safety checks across campus are planned. The meeting finished with a long discussion about whether or not the Academic Affairs committee, chaired by Julia Leusner ’08, should continue to encourage a pass-or-fail first semester for freshmen. |
