McGill crumbles to Engineers’ pressure

RPI SWEPT McGill University 3-0 during their exhibition opener. The season opener will be October 7 at the University of Maine.

Uproar burst forth from the fans in the Houston Field House Sunday evening, as the Rensselaer men’s ice hockey team devastated McGill University in the season exhibition opener with a 3-0 clean sweep.

One minute after a faceoff won by RPI, following two blocked shots from junior Bradley Bell by Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, senior Riley Bourbonnais scored the first goal of the game at 6:43 into the first period. Bell passed to junior Viktor Liljegren, who fed the puck to Bourbonnais down the left side for a clear shot.

The play that led to the second goal of the night did not come until the end of the second period with only two minutes to spare. At 1:17 remaining of play, Liljegren and junior Mike Prapavessis assisted freshman Jacob Hayhurst to his first collegiate goal after Hayhurst won the faceoff only seconds before.

At 2:03 into the third period, the Engineers earned their third and final goal of the day. Sophomore Jesper Ohrvall fired the puck to classmate Evan Tironese, who had skated into the opposing defense. Tironese ushered it through an opening in Gervais-Chouinard’s defense right into the net.

Freshman Chase Perry, a rookie goalie, impressed by halting every attempt on his goal for a total of 26 saves. Gervais-Chouinard, on the other hand, made 40 saves but, unfortunately for the Redmen, not 43.

RPI will return home in two weeks for their Family Weekend games against Niagara University and Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, October 21, and Saturday, October 22, respectively. Their next match will be away in Orono, Maine on Friday when they face the University of Maine Black Bears. On Saturday, they will compete against the Black Bears again to complete the two-day tournament.
