Shaugher swings his way to first

RPI places fourth at Liberty League

Closing the fall season as a first place medalist after earning 147 points in the two-day Liberty League Championship tournament on the par-72 Timber Banks Golf Course in Baldwinsville, New York, senior Aaron Shaugher dominated the 18-hole course on Saturday, scoring three below par, and continued his momentum into Sunday scoring 78. His individual success propelled the Engineers to fourth place out of seven teams.

Junior Erik Larrabee placed second for RPI and 14th overall with 161, or 17 over par. Just four strokes behind him was senior Ben Robinson in a five-way tie for 21st with 165, followed by freshman Nick Franki in 26th with 168.

The only other golfer to score under par on either day of competition was Teddy Badenhausen from Skidmore College, who shot 71 on Saturday. He earned fourth place out of 40 athletes, while his teammate, Mitchell Campbell, took second with 148.

The University of Rochester placed first overall with a team score of 610 for 36 holes. New York University was second with 616, then Skidmore with 625, and Rensselaer with 640.

The Liberty League championship is divided equally between the fall and the spring. 72 holes total are played, with 36 during the fall and 36 during the spring. Qualification for the NCAA Championship Tournament depends upon the performance of the team at the spring tournament on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30.
