Women’s field hockey victory over the Pioneers

JUNIOR COLLEEN FOWLER CHASES after the ball against Utica College last Saturday.

Rensselaer field hockey won 3-1 against visiting Utica College, scoring two of them in the second half. The win came on the heels of the team’s first loss at Hamilton College on September 9, during which a late rally by the Engineers wasn’t enough to erase the two-goal lead built early by the Hamilton Continentals.

Junior midfielder Colleen Fowler and sophomore attack Megan Jones assisted each other’s goals in the second half to lead RPI to victory. Fowler’s goal came early in the second half to give the Engineers a 1-0 edge. Then, after a Utica goal in the 45th minute, a penalty corner by senior attack Angela Cascio in the 49th minute resulted in an open look for Jones, who put it away for the go-ahead score. The goal was Jones fifth in as many games this season.

Fifteen minutes later in the second half, sophomore attack Jena Nawfel cemented the win for RPI with her second goal of the season.

Freshman goalie Rachel Kaufman stood tall for the Engineers, saving four of the five shots sent her way. On the Utica side, goalie Kells Casey also played well, saving seven of the 10 shots she faced.

The next games for Rensselaer are at home against Kean University and Keuka College this Saturday and Sunday at Harkness Field.
