SINCE THE EXCELSIOR WOMEN’S RUGBY CONFERENCE WAS FOUNDED in 2012, the rivalry between RPI and Colgate University has been fierce. After coming out on top in their last two encounters, the RPI women suffered their first defeat against Colgate last Saturday 22-7. At times, it seemed like every scrum was an RPI scrum, thanks to the superior footwork of junior hooker Katie Cummins, who frustrated Colgate repeatedly by winning the ball on their throw. Cummins was also impressive in open field play, and was a major contributor to RPI’s successful rucking. RPI dominated in the second half, maintaining possession of the ball and controlling the game. The centre pairing of junior Sarah Bogdan and senior Lynette Lacek continued to flourish, with Bogdan scoring RPI’s sole try early in the second half. The try was successfully converted with a kick by freshman Jackie Walton, which marks her first score in a league match. The next match is on October 4 at 1 pm at home vs. Hamilton Women’s rugby club on Anderson Field.
