PSS: women’s hockey plays catch-up all weekend
ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 15, THE RPI WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM TOOK the ice to face Cornell’s third-ranked Big Red on Senior Appreciation Day. The previous night, sophomore Brandi Banks scored the Engineers’ lone goal in a 3-1 loss to upstate New York rival Colgate. Early in the second period, Cornell looked as though it was going to take permanent control of the hockey game, scoring two goals before seven minutes had gone by in the second. But the Engineers didn’t quit. By the time 15 minutes had gone by in the second period, goals from both freshman Laura Horwood and junior Taylor Mahoney had tied the score at 4-4. Later, with just twelve seconds to play in the second period, Cornell’s freshman Hanna Bunton scored to give Cornell a one goal edge once more. Despite the Engineers’ valiant efforts and a tying goal from Ali Svoboda, Cornell’s Bunton scored the winning goal for the Big Red in overtime. Final score: Cornell 6, RPI 5. This weekend, the lady Engineers will finish their regular season against northern rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Joseph Shen
