THE FIRST WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY SAW the RPI women’s hockey team host St. Lawrence University and then Clarkson University the following day on Greek Women’s Hockey Night. Against St. Lawrence, sophomore Mari Melkey and senior Jordan Smelker each scored a goal in the first period for RPI, but two second period goals for the Saints lifted them over the Engineers, 4-2. The crowd’s excitement was palpable during the showdown against Clarkson University. Early in the game, the Engineers delivered. Freshman Heidi Huhtamaki gave RPI the advantage with the first goal of the game. However, four Clarkson goals in the first two periods created a deficit from which RPI couldn’t recover. The final score: 5-1 Clarkson. These losses dropped the RPI women’s hockey team to 10-15-2. This weekend they travel to New England in hopes of starting a late season surge prior to the postseason in March against ECAC rivals Brown University and Yale University.
