Women’s soccer improves record

SENIOR GOALIE STEPH VARGAS SETS UP for a punt during RPI’s Saturday win over St. Lawrence.

On Friday, October 4, the Engineers’ women’s soccer team took down St. Lawrence University on home turf with a final score of 3-1, advancing to an excellent record of 6-2-1 thus far in the season. To start off the triumph, senior midfielder Brooke Van Baush quickly put the ball in the back of the net and gave RPI a 1-0 lead extremely early on in the first half. Then, with just under twenty-five minutes left until halftime, the second RPI goal was knocked in by senior standout Sara Rothschild after saving the rebound from rolling out of the zone again. This was Rothschild’s sixth goal of the year.

The Saints put a shot past with nine minutes to go off a corner kick gone deep, but it was their only point of the game. With 36 minutes left of play, the Engineers finished the scoring with a shot by senior captain Giana Abballe assisted by fellow senior captain Alex Shaw. This marked RPI freshman goalie Alex Scholz’s record to 5-0 after the first forty-five minutes—as she only made one save—while senior goalie Steph Vargas saw nothing in the second half.

The Engineers came out victorious over Clarkson University as well on Saturday in a shutout 2-0 and will play against Union on Wednesday night.
