The RPI woman’s soccer team controlled a tough game against William Smith College in a Liberty League game on Friday, September 28.
After a failed scoring attempt by Williams, RPI responded with a quick counter attack that ended when junior Sarah Rothschild controlled a deflection off an opposing player and sent the ball in for a quick goal before the 10th minute. From there, the two teams traded possession of the ball through the center while RPI slowly inched its way up the field. A foul on Williams sent the ball back down to RPI’s goal where RPI junior goalkeeper Steph Vargas easily defended her goal. RPI moved back up the field with a beautiful run by senior Nikki Goodsell past Williams defender, freshman Zoe Gibson. An RPI corner kick was sent right into the center of the goal. Williams goalie junior Chelsea Dunay came out to defend, but RPI sent the ball back in with a rolling shot that that just barely cleared the Williams defensive line. The two teams traded possession on the left side of the field where junior Brooke Van Baush eventually gained control of the ball. Van Baushe dribbled through several of the opposing midfielders and defenders, deftly maintaining possession of the ball. She maneuvered it into the center where she was able to get a cross off to RPI forward senior Shannon Maguire, who planted a beautiful shot in the upper left corner of the goal from the 35 yard line, bringing the score to 2-0 in RPI’s favor. Another RPI goal was thwarted when a free kick off of a Williams foul was rejected by the defense.
The second half began slowly; both teams went back to trading possession through the middle. Neither offense made much headway past the other team’s defense and almost no fouls were traded between the teams. Eventually, RPI broke through, ending with an RPI corner kick. The ball was sent into the middle where RPI sophomore Taylor Korytko sent in a beautiful header over the Williams defense. The ball hit the cross-bar and bounced down in front of Korytko, whose follow-through kick was just barely saved by an incredible dive from Dunay.
A couple of saves by the goalies on both sides, including a dramatic save by RPI from a Williams through ball, and the game ended in an RPI victory.
