Pizza with the President opens communication

Posted 02-02-2005 at 3:36PM

One of the student body’s largest concerns regarding the current administration has always been that it does not communicate and interact well with students. At the same time that President Jackson is saying she would like to spend more time on campus, students are saying they would like to see her more often, and hear her point of view on issues concerning RPI. Therefore, it is good to see the Student Senate’s Committee on Student Life and the President’s Office working together to present “Pizza with the President.”

For two hours yesterday, approximately fifty students sat down with Jackson in Mother’s, ate pizza, drank soda, and asked questions on topics ranging from the upcoming Super Bowl to problems with the advising system. Jackson answered every question (except one on future tuition rates), at times going to lengths to describe background information, and even sometimes asking students to e-mail her with more details so she could look into their situations in greater detail. Many students seemed surprised by the depth of the answers she gave, and many stayed for the entire event.

Given the apparent success of this event, we hope that future occurences are even better attended, and perhaps similar additional events could be created. It would be a great boon to communication between students and the administration on this campus. Considering the results of the recent faculty satisfaction survey, communication is going to be a large issue on campus in the coming months, and events like these and the “Opening Doors” program are excellent opportunities to further communication.
