With just nine seconds remaining, the Louisville Fire’s James Scott hauled in a nine yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Sauk to give the Fire the last second 62-56 victory over the hometown Albany Conquest at the Pepsi Arena on Saturday night.

The Louisville game-winning drive was the first time the visitors had managed to score in the last six minutes. The Conquest, who trailed 55-37 with 6:19 remaining in the game, rallied off three consecutive scoring drives and took the lead on wide receiver Jamie Ware’s two yard touchdown run with only 13 seconds remaining.

However, the Fire managed to put together a quick and powerful drive that stole the game from the winless Conquest.

“That was an emotional game,” said Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews. “We fought back and put ourselves in a position to win, but Louisville is a tough team, and they did not give up either.”

Sauk threw for 290 yards and seven touchdowns on 20-32 passing and earned the game’s Babe Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Game honors. Scott was also unstoppable for the Fire as he racked up 171 yards receiving and four touchdowns on 12 catches.

Offensively, the Conquest got another solid performance from Ware, who made five receptions for 90 yards and found the end zone on three different occasions. Conquest quarterback Gus Ornstein improved his game for the third straight week, throwing for 265 yards, seven touchdowns, and just one interception on 18 of 32 passing.

The Conquest displayed a balanced attack in the air on offense as Ornstein found Ware, Tony Locke, and Jeff Higgins in the end zone two times apiece.

Special teams were solid for Albany as the team combined for an impressive 172 return yards on the short 50-yard field of arena football. However, the ground game was again lacking for Albany as they only gained 27 yards on 14 attempts on the ground.

Defensively the Conquest struggled to get much pressure on Sauk, registering no sacks, and only forcing him into one interception. In the end, turnovers were again the Conquest’s Achilles heel as Albany lost three fumbles and one interception compared to Louisville’s one interception.

Albany is currently in last place in the Northeast Division, and will look to get its first win next Friday at 7:30 when the team travels to Manchester to avenge a 47-34 loss to the Wolves on April 17. The Conquest will return to Albany on May 8 for their match-up with the first place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. Game time is 7 pm, and their will be a halftime and post game concert put on by The Burners U.K.
