The men’s and women’s crew programs were in action this weekend at the inaugural UCAA Crew Championships. The women’s team placed fourth in the team point totals after the varsity 8-oared crew posted the third fastest time of the day, winning in the petite final. Coach Todd Rutecki, “These women put together a great race in the afternoon in very windy conditions. We were able to place fourth overall with only two entries. That’s pretty impressive.” Comprising the varsity 8+ were Chip Boyd, Elizabeth Montabana, Amanda Smith, Jessica Magnus, Monica Berrondo, Krista Michaels, Lark Barnett, Keri Kiernan, and Jennifer Peck.

The Red Hawk men edged Hobart College in dramatic fashion for the team point championship. Varsity 8+ stroke seat Robert Iuliano, “We knew that it was going to come down to the last men’s race of the day—the grand final of the varsity 8. Our second varsity had already won. We went into the final with the slowest qualifying time. We put together our best race of the reason—it’s nice to come up big on race day.”

The men’s crew won the team title with 28 points followed closely by Hobart with 25. The men’s varsity team was made up of Emily Albright, Robert Iuliano, Andrew Kursar, Christopher Bigos, Mark Furler, Colin Leary, Philip Pratt-Szeliga, Christopher Wallace, and Matthew Bennice. The men’s second varsity boat line-up was Timothy Zander, Richard Fallon, Paul Enge, Christopher Werner, Joseph Rustick, Greg Carpenter, Christopher (Kit) Heron, John Martin, and Timothy Broder.

All crews are back in action this weekend at the NYS Collegiate Rowing Championships, which serves as the regional qualifyer for the ECAC National Invitational Championship.
