The end-of-the-year momentum was starting to swing the Red Hawks’ way. The rain had other ideas.

The weather washed away five games this week. Last Wednesday’s doubleheader versus Manhattanville was postponed to Tuesday, which was later cancelled. Rain also washed away the second game of a doubleheader at Rochester Sunday, after the Yellowjackets and Red Hawks played three scoreless innings.

In the single game that was not cancelled, RPI took on Rochester in a UCAA match-up.

The first five innings turned into a pitchers’ duel, with the Red Hawks’ Nikki Dooley shutting down the Yellowjacket offense. Dooley allowed only two hits in the first five innings and four hits overall.

The Red Hawks’ offense came to live in the top of the sixth, exploding for six runs on five hits. Liz Vitaliano led off the inning with a walk, and Laura Feeney sacrificed her to second with a bunt down the first base line. Katie Valenta singled, driving in Vitaliano to plate the first run of the game. Amanda Bolognino, Stephanie Vanek, Amy Huling, and Ali O’Connor hit four straight singles, with Vanek, Huling, and O’Connor driving in runs.

Shannon Quinn ripped a hot shot at the Rochester shortstop, but got thrown out at first, with O’Connor scoring on the play. Dooley ended the rally with a ground out to the second baseman.

After the dust had settled on the rally, RPI was up 6-0. In the top of the sixth, the Red Hawks added two insurance runs. Vitaliano and Feeney led off the inning with a pair of singles, and both came around to score.

Vitaliano led the offense for the Red Hawks, tallying two hits and scoring two runs in the 8-1 victory. O’Connor had a pair of hits, with a run and an RBI, and Vanek hit two singles, scoring a run and driving in two.

The Red Hawks and the Yellowjackets played three scoreless innings in the second half of the twin-bill, but rain halted the match. It will not be made up.

The Red Hawks have two more games left on their schedule, a pair of make-up games May 5 at Montclair State. They currently stand at 5-2 in UCAA play and 18-8 overall, and are awaiting word on an outright bid to the NCAA Tournament.
