In the wake of the recent national tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001, we have seen the people of the nation rise up and come together. Coming together, while still remembering our roots. Our similarity as Americans overrides all other differences. I see this as analogous to our own situation here at Rensselaer.
Here at Rensselaer we need to appreciate that we are all different, but we need to appreciate even more that we are all RPI students. The fact also remains that if you are greek, you are also a member of your own chapter, but the point is that you are greek. There is a bond between greeks that you only start to appreciate by walking among the ranks. Once a member of an individual group, there are ways to come together and bind as one student body. I would like to see our campus follow the example set by the rest of America and become more united.
There are several ways to pursue this goal. Coming together as a community and doing things together is key. Chapters on campus need to help host and organize events. A large part of what greek organizations do is community service oriented—by including other chapters and other campus groups in the planning process of a community service event or any other event, it can go much smoother and be more effective. There are already several events that greeks hold with other houses, but we must try to improve upon those and create more unity.
In addition to working with other campus organizations, it is useful to utilize on-campus resources. The Dean of Students Office, Office of the First Year Experience, Student Union, and Student Health Center are always willing to work with greek organizations in event planning, to assist with then development of programs and the securing of space on campus to hold them in.
In the coming months we have many events that are being organized by one chapter or another. From American Patriotic Week this week, to fundraisers, to alumni meetings, to blood drives and countless other events. If we could find ways to incorporate other chapters and groups into the planning and execution of the event, I guarantee the event will make people come together better as a whole, and the event will run smoother with more support.
