Toxicity is System of a Down’s second album. After hearing the CD, I was very impressed. Many times I have seen second albums fall flat on their faces, but such was not the case with this one. This was a record filled with an amazing amount of awesome music that surely makes you want to leave it in your player forever.
For that matter, System is one of the few metal/hard rock bands that has a message. The only other one to speak of is Rage Against the Machine. The difference between the two is that System doesn’t do it in a haphazard way. They convey their message so that everyone can understand it, not just someone who is pissed off.
Lead singer Serj Tankian did an amazing job with creating a music styling that can not be duplicated. He simply has an amazing ability to sing, bark, and do speed metal all in the same song, and make you appreciate it. This was the case in "Jet Pilot." This song jumps from being a punkish type song into being something a bit more western. It is an interesting contrast that helps to define all that System of a Down truly is.
I would highly recommend that people buy this CD. Whether you liked System before now, or you have never heard them before, you will like this record. There is simply no comparison that can be made between this and other albums that are out today.
Here is a track-by-track review:
1. "Prison Song"—A killer opening song that is quite lively.
2. "Needles"—Quite possibly the best song on the album.
3. "Deer Dance"—One of many killer songs on the album.
4. "Jet Pilot"—"Wow" would be the best way to describe this song. It’s a mix of Punk and Western music, all rolled into one great song.
5. "X"—A great song that would be better if it were longer.
6. "Chop Suey"—The song that we all hear on the radio. It’s a great song, but it’s overplayed.
7. "Bounce"—"Interesting" is the word I would use to describe this song. It could stand to be longer though.
8. "Forest"—This is a killer tune.
9. "Atwa"—Great song. One of the best on the album.
10. "Science"—Kind of a boring song, but not terrible.
11. "Shimmy"—A jazzy kind of song that works well, but would work better if it were longer.
12. "Toxicity"—This song could easily become a SOAD classic.
13. "Psycho"—This is a lively song that epitomizes what SOAD is capable of producing.
14. "Aerials"—A perfect ending to a great album.
