Senior Defenseman Steve Munn returns this year as co-captain of the Engineers for what he expects to be an exciting season for the hockey team.

Munn, who comes to RPI from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, has been playing hockey since he was young, beginning with street hockey games with his friends in his then-hometown of Maymont. "From the first time I was allowed to go down the street with my buddies, that’s all we did," he said.

He first heard about RPI while playing in a hockey tournament in Boston—the Engineers’ coaching staff was in attendance. "After two years in junior hockey at [Boston College], I had the opportunity to come down here."

"It’s great," he said about the school. "I’m very, very lucky to play hockey for such a great organization."

A senior in the management program, Munn is proud of his academics as well. "A degree from RPI is nothing to sneeze at," he said.

Munn says he enjoys the sense of brotherhood that the players share. He has no family near the school, so his teammates are like a family away from home. "We’re with each other every day for eight or nine months out of the year," he said.

Munn is "excited about getting started" with the season. He believes the Engineers’ strong scoring, solid defense, and numerous returning players will make this year’s team a difficult one to beat. "It’s a great squad," he said. "Everything is right there."

"There’s going to be a lot of excitement, not just for us, but for the fans," he added.

He talked about his first game as a freshman, a home game against Boston University. "I felt like it was over in five minutes," he said. "There’s really nothing like your first game in the Red and White."

Munn is very appreciative of the fans for supporting the team. "You can’t help but get butterflies in your stomach when the band starts playing and the crowd is cheering," he said.

He says he has a lot of happy memories with the team, but none that stand out as his favorite. He remains hopeful. "I hope to have a memorable moment at Lake Placid," he said.

In addition to tearing it up on the ice and studying to become a successful leader in industry, Munn participates with several groups on and off campus. He sits on both the Union Athletic Board and the Student Athletic Advisory Board. He is a member of the committee working to select a new athletic director for RPI, and he was on the interview board that examined candidates for the position of vice president for student life. He also helps out the Troy Youth Hockey program, and over the summer he worked at a center for troubled youth.

Munn hopes to continue playing hockey for a professional team after he graduates from RPI.
