Recently, I learned that certain dishonest individuals are attempting to profit from the attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that killed thousands of innocent people.
Many of the scams come in the form of unsolicited e-mail, spam, fraudulent websites, and postings in community discussion forums which solicit donations for victims and survivors of tragedy.
According to a report on ZDNET News, a typical message claims to be part of an "Express Relief Fund" or "Victims Survivor Fund."
Other e-mails pretend to be associated with the organizations such as the Red Cross but led readers who click on donation links to websites not connected to those organizations.
The fact that a number of unscrupulous crooks have even considered profiting from American suffering of this magnitude is extremely disturbing to me.
At a time when many in our nation look toward solidarity and justice for those who would commit terrorism, certain vile individuals look only for greed and to advance their own self-interests by capitalizing on the uninformed.
If you receive a donation e-mail message, read a forum post, or visit a website that appears suspicious, please contact an anti-scam organization, such as Scambusters, and notify them about the scam details.
In addition to the donation scams, some gas stations throughout the U.S. have alarmingly raised their prices in response to the uncertainty surrounding the crisis, according to CNN.
To this, all I can do is express my full disapproval of such actions and hope that owners of gas stations have the moral principles to reconsider their decisions.
During this trying time of instability in our nation, I ask those who would take advantage of grief and bereavement to notice that our nation is now at war with terrorism and demands their allegiance and support, not egotism.
Please be respectful and considerate of the grief and suffering of individuals around you, many of whom have lost relatives and friends in the tragedies. Mocking or taking advantage of those who wish to express their sorrow is entirely irresponsible, and indeed, offensive.
