The Student Senate considered the campus reaction to the World Trade Center tragedy at a meeting held on Tuesday, September 18. Two campus incidents resulting from the tragedy had been reported to Public Safety: a hate poster found in BARH and a student harassed by a Troy resident.

Grand Marshal Gil Valadez recounted his discussions with Muslim students regarding safety on campus. Although most Muslim students feel safe on campus, RPI and the City of Troy remained on heightened alert and increased the number of officers patrolling the campus and the city.

The Senate also approved minutes from its last several meetings. Minor changes still need to be made, and the Senate plans to seek approval of those changes at the next meeting.

The senators considered student appointments from the schools of architecture, engineering, and management to the Commission on Academic Integrity. No approvals were made, but senators plan to report back with nominations at the next meeting.

Senator Chris Gill was approved 15-0-1 as the student representative to the Institute Finance Committee.

As the representative, Gill will attend Institute finance meetings, convey information to the Senate, and raise student concerns to the committee.

Megan Campion was unanimously approved by the Senate as the Greek Judicial Board chair, and Peter Sherman was approved unanimously as graduate representative. Brian Rhee, ’03, was not approved.

Valadez encouraged Senate members to get involved with RenSAT, the Senate committee for sexual awareness. He described it as the "shining start" of last year’s Senate.

It was reported that due to the events of last week, the timeline for the parking garage has been pushed back a month.
