Derby First-time experience draws RPI together

Ariana Twitchell President of the Union A few weeks ago, I based my article on first-time experiences, first classes, first homework assignments, first rehearsals, and first practices. Although this week did not bring a first class or a first paper, it did bring a much more profound first experience, an experience many in our generation had yet to face in their lives, but here we are. We have experienced our first national tragedy; one of mass destruction, devastation, fear, sadness, anger, and uncertainty.
As growing individuals, I am not sure that many of us know how to process all that has happened since last Tuesday. I find myself still in awe of what happened, still unable to grasp the magnitude of destruction, and still not capable of believing that our lives are changed forever.
I have been more at ease this week knowing that I am part of a community that has faced this devastation head on. We have come together as students, faculty, and staff to represent our nation, our community, our families. We have given blood, gathered in remembrance and reflection, collected donations, and shared words of unity, tolerance, and support of one another.
You have all pushed your lives to the side to help others who desperately needed you. You listened, encouraged, and comforted those around you. You have lead, made decisions, and set exemplary standards for those surrounding you. You have embodied the essence of human dignity, and I commend you for your strength your patience and your leadership. | |
