Soccer teams split weekend

This weekend, while many people were back at home seeing family, the soccer teams were out of town for the first regular-season games of the year. The men’s team had an unfortunate 0-2 loss to Elmira. Head Coach Aldo Nardiello said, "The team is still cursed with the misfortune of giving up valuable points very early in the game."

The first goal was scored on a set play by Elmira, which allowed them to take a lead with only 90 seconds having elapsed. The Red Hawks then went on the offensive and were able to produce multiple scoring opportunities, but unfortunately could not capitalize on any of them—though the men played a great game, they were unable to penetrate the net. Mike Greco shot one just over the bar, and Luke Gentile hit one off the post. Dino Kasvikis also nearly managed to cash in on one of the Red Hawks’ opportunities but was stopped by Elmira’s goalie at point-blank range.

With three minutes left, Elmira scored again off of another set play from a corner kick, which for the most part secured the win for Elmira.

The team was at a disadvantage due to the narrow field, which downplayed the team’s strengths. They also suffered a major setback when, just into the second half, starting Goalie Marc Salmin suffered an injury just above the eye resulting in a few stitches and requiring him to leave the game.

The game was played with a lot of heart, but in the end the Red Hawks stumbled away with a loss.

The team is hoping to have a good showing at the Union Tournament this weekend, where they will face MIT and other teams throughout the region.

The women’s team had a very different—and very unusual—game this weekend at Southern Vermont, where they dominated the field in a 14-0 victory. Southern Vermont had suffered some prior injuries and was only able to put 11 people on the roster, which put them at a drastic disadvantage. The Red Hawks simply overpowered the worn-out opponents, but they did not try to run up the score in any way. They played one player down for part of the game and even put in an entire freshman lineup for the latter half of the game.

The team is not seeing this game as an indication of what the other games will be like this season. However, the team hopes to carry this kind of momentum into their upcoming games. The women’s next game is their home opener on Friday versus Russell Sage.
