Raymond Lutzky
Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations

First, I am very happy to report that after almost a year of intensive work and discussions, the Greek Life Task Force has released the proposed revisions to the Statement of Relationship Between Rensselaer and Fraternities & Sororities. These revisions are available online at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/doso/greek. I encourage greek students, alumni, advisors, and national representatives to review this document and submit feedback to Travis Apgar, director of greek life (apgart@rpi.edu). It is important that during this period of review all voices are heard. This document is the guideline by which Rensselaer and its greeks conduct themselves and is a national model of cooperation and collaboration between the Institute and it’s students. It is a testament to the commitment of the administration to greeks, and I commend them for their vision and hard work.

Second, I am also glad to say that this academic year has been a great one for greek life. The amount of philanthropy and charity by greek chapters has increased, and so has the publicity the system has received. The IFC and Panhellenic Association have worked hard to produce programming and policies aimed at improving our system and the quality of life for greek students on campus. Travis Apgar, assistant dean of students and director of greek life, has guided our system through his first year, and a number of successes. The recent appointment of Dr. Eddie Ade Knowles to vice president for student life is also a "victory" for the greek system. Our system has once again shown that it is a vibrant and important part of Rensselaer’s campus, and an asset to the Institute.

As the year comes to a close, I hope that all greeks enjoy a fun (but safe) summer break. For those of you who will be attending national conferences for your organizations, keep Rensselaer in mind, and try to bring what you learn from your national leaders back to our chapters. For officers, spend at least some time thinking about plans for the future, and the 2001-2002 academic year. Come back refreshed and renewed, and ready for fall Rush. Let’s show the class of 2005, and all current students on campus, the meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood, our leadership, and our spirit. Our continued existence depends upon our returning to campus ready to increase our numbers and continually improve our chapters. Surely, the best is yet to come.
